Rome, 4 November 2009 – The Board of Directors of the Education for All - Fast Track Initiative (EFA FTI) selected Ms. Carol Bellamy as the new Chair of the EFA FTI Board of Directors. Ms. Bellamy’s appointment is effective December 1, 2009 and will run through December 31, 2012. Ms. Bellamy’s nomination was confirmed at the EFA FTI Board meeting of November 4, 2009 in Rome, Italy, following a competitive selection process.

In her new position, Ms. Bellamy will provide leadership for the Education for All Fast Track Initiative, the global partnership supporting Universal Primary Education by 2015.

Dr. Bellamy is a well-known international advocate for children's education and children's rights. She served as UNICEF Executive Director from 1995 to 2005 and Director of the US Peace Corps from 1993 to 1995. More recently, she was President and CEO of World Learning, a US-based international organization that promotes international learning and development in over 75 countries.

“I look forward to working with the EFA FTI partnership”, says Carol Bellamy. “Much has been accomplished over the past decade; millions more children in low-income countries have enrolled into school and many more girls have an education. However, 75 million children are still out-of-school today and many others do not reach adequate learning levels. I believe that EFA FTI is the right mechanism to make progress on this agenda.”

“We are excited to have Dr. Bellamy leading this important partnership”, says John Nielsen, representative from Denmark, currently co-chair of the EFA FTI Board. “We have recently seen unprecedented gains in access to education in developing countries. This process cannot be stalled by the global economic crisis which puts education budgets under stress everywhere around the world. With Carol’s leadership we are confident we can put EFA FTI at the next level.”
